Think of it like this, when you grow old you're gonna say things like - "When I was your age, I puked on the dog", now not only will you be able to show your grand kids when it happened you can show photos of it too.

Facebook is the next generation of web "applications" if I may, and it allows you to create a personal website which only you and your friends can see. Don't be fooled by the term website though, because it is far from it. It is practically an extension of your personal space into the web domain.
